Sapporo District Meteorological Observatory raised the eruption warning around Hokkaido's Tokachi-dake from level 2 to 3 at 09:30 local time on Sept. 12 after a sustained increase in high-amplitude volcanic earthquakes since Aug. 17. Canadian media reported on Sept. 11 that the minister responsible for Canada–U.S. trade said there are no formal trade negotiations with the United States, though he remains in contact with U.S. Trade Representative Greer and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. He warned the two countries' escalating trade dispute is a key government concern and said Ottawa must be prepared for a potential agreement, which would have to respect Canadian sovereignty and national interests.
