The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday afternoon (New York time) at France’s request to discuss the escalating situation in the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a key global shipping chokepoint. Before fighting resumed earlier this month roughly 12% of global trade transited the strait. In recent days Houthi forces have seized much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including Mayyun Island inside the strait.
