Ireland Finance Minister Simon Harris downplayed the threat that President Trump
would impose tariffs on EU imports over moves to advance Canada’s path toward EU
candidacy, saying ahead of an informal EU finance ministers’ meeting in Dublin
that the risk should not be overstated and that Trump’s full remarks should be
considered rather than selective quotes. Trump said on Thursday he could impose
new tariffs on imports from the EU or curtail some trade if he deems efforts to
push Canada toward EU candidate status harmful to the US, but he added he would
not act if the move is in good faith.
