OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will brief the UN Security Council next week during the UN
General Assembly in New York. The Security Council is scheduled to hold an open
meeting on AI and international security on Wednesday. OpenAI said Altman will
outline the company’s measures to secure AI, efforts to ensure the technology
benefits broadly, and the need for international coordination and common safety
standards. The meeting comes as several AI industry figures urge coordinated
slowdowns in advanced AI development, warning rapid capability gains could
create risks beyond human control. Altman has previously warned of AI risks,
including a 2015 article saying superintelligence could be among humanity’s
largest threats.
