People familiar said ECB executive board member Schnabel will leave early to
join the IMF as head of its Monetary and Capital Markets Department, with the
move expected in January — well ahead of her eight-year term ending in December
next year. Her early exit will intensify pressure on next year’s ECB leadership
reshuffle: ECB president Lagarde and chief economist Lane are also due to leave.
EU leaders will seek agreement on all three appointments, potentially at the
December summit, with France and Germany aiming to retain executive-board seats
and Spain also vying for a seat.
