Germany, Europe’s largest economy, on Wednesday unveiled a roadmap to phase out
fossil fuels by 2045. The framework consolidates existing measures and adds a
low-carbon technology strategy to outline how the target can be met. Environment
Minister Schneider said at a UN climate event in New York the plan will
substantially reduce Germany’s fossil fuel imports and lower reliance on supply
chains vulnerable to geopolitical shocks. Germany is the third major European
economy, after France and the Netherlands, to publish a fossil-fuel exit
roadmap.
