On Sept. 27 evening Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addressed the nation and announced his resignation. On Sept. 5 the Serbian Progressive Party central committee nominated Vucic as lead candidate on its parliamentary election list and as its candidate for prime minister; he accepted. On Sept. 9 Vucic signed a decree dissolving parliament and set early parliamentary elections for Oct. 25. Vucic was first elected president in April 2017 and re-elected in May 2022. Under the Serbian constitution presidential terms are five years and may be renewed once.
