New Zealand government bonds opened weaker and Australian bond futures signalled declines after yields across the US curve surged: the 10-year Treasury jumped about 11bp to 5.27% — a 19-year high — and the 30-year rose to 5.55%. Short-dated yields also advanced as traders priced continued Fed tightening to curb inflation. Morgan Stanley analyst Chris Larkin said rising yields and oil have sapped market momentum and, barring a major surprise in this week’s US jobs data, focus is likely to remain on rates and energy prices.

A Kenyan court ordered construction on Aliko Dangote’s $16 billion refinery in Lamu County halted after local residents filed land-ownership claims, directing the site to remain in a "status quo" until a further hearing in October. The refinery, one of Africa’s largest industrial projects, is designed to cut East Africa’s reliance on imported refined fuels. Its strategic importance has increased after the Iran war disrupted shipments via the Strait of Hormuz, a route previously used for much of the region’s fuel imports. The Kenyan president said the government is "100%" supportive of Dangote Group’s expansion in East Africa.
