On Oct 1 the rotor of the variable-speed unit at the Langjiang pumped-storage
project in Zhaoqing, Guangdong was hoisted, marking completion of the main
installation for a domestically produced 300 MW unit. The unit, included on
China’s major energy technology equipment list in 2022, can vary speed by 7% to
adjust output across a 50% power range in real time and can convert surplus wind
and solar into about 280,000 cubic meters of stored water per hour. The project
has entered a commissioning push and is scheduled for full commercial operation
in 1H2027. Once operational the plant will absorb roughly 2.16 bln kWh of clean
energy annually and cut CO2 emissions by about 1.9 mln tonnes, providing
flexible storage support for the new power system.
