Iran’s permanent UN mission said the Iranian delegation left New York on the
evening of Sept. 28 under a pre-planned itinerary that was notified to the US
State Department on Sept. 17. The US said on Sept. 30 that Sept. 28 US‑Iran
talks had stalled with neither side willing to make concessions, and Secretary
of State Rubio demanded the Iranian delegation leave the US immediately. US
commentators called the demand a “very unusual diplomatic rebuke” that exposed
deep mutual distrust. Qatari mediators are reportedly still engaging both sides
to seek a compromise.
