Ethiopia’s federal parliament met on the 5th to form a new government and
approved Abiy as prime minister; he was subsequently sworn in. In June’s
parliamentary election Abiy’s Prosperity Party won 438 of 486 seats in the House
of Peoples’ Representatives; under the constitution the party holding a majority
forms the government and appoints the prime minister. The prime minister holds
the country’s highest executive authority. Abiy first became prime minister in
April 2018 after his predecessor resigned and was reappointed in 2021.
