Indonesia is discussing a plan to halt new processing facilities for
semi-finished nickel products to support prices, senior minister Bahlil
Lahadalia said on Wednesday. He said an oversupply of semi-finished nickel has
pushed prices lower and the government is considering scaling back or suspending
such capacity while promoting downstream production of finished nickel goods.
Indonesia, the world’s largest nickel exporter, mainly ships nickel pig iron and
ferronickel, and the government will continue to support prices by controlling
mining extraction quotas.
