The PBOC said China operates a managed floating exchange-rate regime for the renminbi based on market supply and demand and referencing a basket of currencies, with the market playing the decisive role in exchange-rate formation. The central bank noted the renminbi has exhibited two-way floating for more than 20 years and, since 2010, has experienced multiple appreciation and depreciation cycles with stronger two-way fluctuations and greater flexibility. The PBOC reiterated China will not seek trade advantage through currency depreciation and will not engage in competitive devaluation; trade growth reflects rising industrial competitiveness.

Hong Kong close: HSI down 1.43%, Hang Seng Tech Index down 2.89% to its lowest level since Sep 2024. Value traded HKD 207.3 bln. Large-model AI names led declines: MINIMAX-W (00100.HK) plunged >13%, 02513.HK fell >7%. Semiconductors and optical-communications stocks were broadly weaker: 01347.HK dropped >9%, 03986.HK and 09976.HK down >7%, 01191.HK down >13%. Optical-fiber and laminates names 06869.HK and 01888.HK fell >6%.
