Foreign media, citing local residents, report Eritrean soldiers have crossed
into northern Ethiopia and advanced toward areas where Ethiopian government
forces are clashing with local fighters. Fighting between Addis Ababa and forces
linked to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) began two weeks ago; both
sides accuse the other of violating a 2022 peace agreement. Ethiopia alleges
Eritrea is backing the TPLF; Eritrea denies this. Eritrea was a key ally of
Ethiopia in the 2020–22 war against the TPLF, but relations deteriorated after
reports the Ethiopian prime minister sought control of an Eritrean Red Sea port.
The two countries severed diplomatic ties last week. The escalation could add
fresh geopolitical and shipping risk in the Red Sea.
