Canada is seeking a trade agreement with India by year-end; the fifth round of
talks began on Oct. 5 and Indian Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Canada
in December to sign a deal if one is reached. Negotiations prioritize expanded
cooperation in mining and food security and identify infrastructure investment
and nuclear energy as potential commercial focal points. India is opening its
nuclear sector to private firms to speed capacity expansion, creating
opportunities for Canadian companies; Canada has substantial uranium resources
and nuclear technology and could supply fuel and participate in Indian new-build
projects.
