President Trump announced GlobalFoundries will invest $21 billion to build two
large semiconductor fabs in Malta, New York, with funding provided by Japan
under a prior trade agreement. The project is expected to create about 27,000
construction and supply‑chain jobs and more than 1,000 high‑skilled
manufacturing roles. The administration said the U.S. government will take an
equity stake in GlobalFoundries; the Commerce Department will add $955 million
for silicon photonics, SiGe and advanced packaging, bringing total Commerce
investment to $1.63 billion, and the government’s stake is said to exceed $2
billion. Trump also announced the launch of the Alaska LNG (AlaskaLNG) project,
described as Alaska’s largest-ever energy infrastructure project; under an
earlier trade and investment deal, South Korea will invest $50 billion. He said
the project is now a federal government project, all required permits and
authorizations are in place, and work can proceed immediately.
