On Wednesday eight U.S. states filed suit against OpenAI, accusing the company of misleading users about ChatGPT's safety and failing to provide safeguards that they say contributed to suicide, self-harm and violent behavior among users, including minors. Arkansas's complaint alleges OpenAI's leadership acknowledged the risks and employees repeatedly raised serious safety concerns, yet the company accelerated releases of increasingly powerful models without sufficient testing or protections, prioritizing growth and profit. Joining Arkansas are Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska and West Virginia; all state attorneys general except Arizona are Republicans. The states seek court orders to force changes to OpenAI's safety operations, stronger protections for children and monetary damages.
