Refinitiv cited sources saying the World Economic Forum could appoint ECB
President Lagarde as its next chair as early as November, which would require
her to step down from the ECB and prompt broader senior staffing changes.
Lagarde's ECB term is scheduled to end in October next year; she has said she
will remain into next year but has not committed to serving the full term. An
early exit would allow EU leaders to pick a new ECB president before France's
spring presidential election and could smooth agreement on appointments to two
other senior ECB posts. Sources said the WEF board, where Lagarde is a member,
meets on Nov. 2 and could elect her; the WEF aims to hold the handover by
year-end. After Schnabel's resignation last month, Lagarde's departure would
create a second vacancy among the ECB's six executive board members; ECB chief
economist Philip Lane is due to leave in May next year.
