On Oct 18 local time, Canada's Department of National Defence said there is no
indication the incident at the Wainwright military base was caused by "any
terrorist activity." The DND said a fire broke out at about 16:00 on Oct 17 at
the Wainwright base and caused casualties. The blaze spread rapidly beyond a
training area; military and civilian emergency services responded. The DND said
its immediate priority is supporting affected personnel and notifying next of
kin and that it will not confirm casualty figures until notifications are
complete.
