Multiple sources said on Monday the Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) will approve corrective orders at a Wednesday plenary under the Telecommunications Business Act fining Google 42.9 bln won (about $32.4 mln) and Apple 20.8 bln won (about $15.7 mln), a combined 63.7 bln won (about $48.1 mln), for forcing developers to use their in‑app payment systems. The requirement routes purchases through Google’s or Apple’s payment systems rather than developer-operated systems; both firms levy commissions up to 30% depending on revenue. The action comes three years after KMCC first signaled intent to penalize the U.S. tech groups. KMCC chair Kim Jong-cheol told a parliamentary oversight hearing on Oct. 12 he expects a decision before the end of October.
