Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China reported they used stepwise surface synthesis to produce a metallic carbon nanoribbon composed exclusively of five- and seven-membered rings. The team said the sub-nanometer-wide, one-dimensional structure—carbon atoms joined by covalent bonds—exhibits efficient electronic transport; results were published online in Nature on the 29th.
