On the 30th, Irish prime minister Martin said Ireland will establish a
government body to study and prepare for the possibility of future reunification
with Northern Ireland, marking the first formal review. The body will assess
different models and challenges, including scenarios in which Northern Ireland
remains in the UK or retains devolved status within a united Ireland, and will
consult relevant communities. Under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, if there are
signs a majority in Northern Ireland favour unity the UK is obliged to hold a
referendum. Martin said he aims to submit initial measures to cabinet by
year-end.
