Spot gold fell 3.08% to $3,897.48/oz, spot silver dropped 5.90% to $49.09/oz and
platinum declined 4.22% to $1,425.20/oz on Oct. 30. The Federal Reserve held
rates at 3.75%-4.00% in a 10-2 vote but two officials advocated an immediate
hike; US Q3 GDP came in at 3.4% and PCE inflation at 3.6%, bolstering market
bets on a December rate increase. The metals rout did not follow a stronger USD
or higher Treasury yields — both the dollar and UST yields retraced — and
occurred after a tech-led equity selloff drove flows into bonds, suggesting the
falls may reflect liquidity-driven liquidation of highly liquid precious-metal
positions. The gold/silver ratio rose to 79.4, underscoring silver’s larger
decline versus gold.
