State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) said on Oct. 31 that Phase III of its
Haiyang nuclear power project has begun after the reactor island for Unit 5
received its first concrete pour. The Haiyang site in Shandong is planned in
three phases for six 1,000-MW-class units and is among the world’s first
third-generation nuclear projects. Units 5 and 6 will use domestically developed
third-generation advanced passive pressurized-water reactor technology. SPIC
said the Phase III start is a key project under its 15th Five-Year Plan and is
Shandong’s first nuclear project to break ground during that planning period.
