Paris prosecutors have opened an investigation into an Oct. 31 incident in the
city's 12th arrondissement where a homemade petrol bomb was thrown at a gendarme
during nationwide protests. The explosion caused minor injuries to one gendarme;
prosecutors are treating the case as attempted murder of a public official.
Interior Minister Nunez said police faced significant violence during the
demonstrations but overall order was maintained. The interior ministry reported
about 320,000 people demonstrated nationwide on Oct. 31 and 779 arrests were
made.
