Pollsters warn that with the risk of midterm losses rising, President Trump
could lay the groundwork for a repeat of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack by alleging
fraud and urging supporters back onto the streets. Concerns have led some
battleground polling sites to install bulletproof glass and other counterterror
measures and prompted some local election officials to carry handguns. Election
monitors are training poll workers to respond to threats ranging from Justice
Department legal notices to confrontational voters, and one watchdog said there
has been a wave of resignations among election staff citing safety fears.
