U.S. Democrats have outperformed expectations in early returns, picking up a
North Carolina Senate seat and exceeding forecasts in several Florida districts.
With Roy Cooper winning the North Carolina Senate contest, Democrats still need
a net gain of three seats to win Senate control. Florida’s governor and Senate
races proved far tighter than Republicans expected; Republican senator Ashley
Moody narrowly beat challenger Angie Nixon while the Florida governor’s race
remained undecided. As returns arrived, Democratic morale rose; Trump remained
at the White House holding closed‑door meetings with aides.
