China’s agriculture ministry held a video conference on May 18 to deploy
implementation of the revised hog production capacity control plan, as
authorities seek to shift the industry from volume-driven expansion toward
higher-quality development.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said local authorities should
strengthen regular and targeted capacity controls, advance capacity cuts and
industry restructuring, and consolidate the recent recovery in hog prices while
promoting pork consumption.
The ministry also urged farmers to avoid excessive herd retention and
speculative expansion based on market expectations, while calling for tighter
controls on new capacity additions, stronger guidance and risk warnings for
large pig breeders, and differentiated development paths for smaller farms.
