China has begun restricting overseas travel for senior AI professionals at
private firms including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and DeepSeek, according to
people familiar with the matter. Government agencies are requiring approval for
overseas trips by individuals involved in advanced AI work deemed strategically
important. The measures expand longstanding travel controls previously applied
to sensitive sectors and reflect Beijing’s efforts to safeguard technology and
narrow the AI gap with the US.
