South Korea's antitrust regulator will establish a new investigation unit focused on platform firms and large chaebol, effectively restoring functions similar to its former investigative bureau that was abolished 21 years ago, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said. FTC Chair Ju Biung-ghi said that as platform-related cases become more complex, the current system of investigating and penalizing different parts of large cases separately may underestimate the overall severity. He added that oversight should be strengthened for chaebol accused of unfair practices during intergenerational business succession. The FTC also plans to create a 40-person unit focused on economic and Data Talk analysis to bolster its infrastructure and analytical capacity.
