Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force said on May 30 it canceled a planned
early-June US Marine Corps F-35B deck-landing exercise aboard escort ship JS
Kaga in the western Pacific. The service cited "unit operational scheduling and
expected severe weather". The exercise was among steps toward the ship's "de
facto aircraft carrier" capability; earlier reports said Japan's Defense
Ministry planned two major refits to enable F-35B operations.
