The three-day 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue ended in Singapore today. Attention
focused on a US-China leaders' meeting and their agreement to pursue a
"constructive strategic stability" in relations. ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim
Hourn said that means strategic competition should not preclude cooperation on
shared interests and must not escalate into conflict, a stance ASEAN considers
crucial. Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said the leaders' meeting set the
tone and direction for bilateral ties and provides a firm basis to advance
US-China relations.
