May 28-29 — Chinese and US military delegations met in Hawaii for the 2026
bilateral maritime security consultative mechanism working-group meeting. Guided
by a shared aim to build a constructive strategic-stability relationship,
delegations held frank exchanges on current maritime and air security
conditions, assessed implementation of the China‑US Code for Safe Encounters at
Sea and in the Air since the 2025 meeting, and discussed measures to improve
handling of maritime military-safety issues. Both sides said effective
military-to-military communication helps front-line units perform tasks more
professionally and reduces risk of miscalculation. China reiterated firm
opposition to any use of freedom of navigation or overflight to undermine its
sovereignty or security, condemned infringement, provocative acts and close-in
reconnaissance and harassment, and said it will continue to lawfully and
resolutely defend territorial sovereignty and maritime rights while maintaining
regional peace and prosperity.
