An internal State Department memo says the U.S. will sharply curtail visa operations in Africa in coming weeks, cutting the number of American embassies and consulates that process visas from nearly 50 to 20 designated hubs. Three unnamed U.S. officials said on June 1 that Secretary of State Rubio approved the plan last week and the changes are expected to begin in June. One official said consular leadership was notified on a conference call last week that routine consular services outside the 20 hubs will be scaled back.
