On June 2 Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the government has formally written to the Thai government and the UN Secretariat to initiate compulsory conciliation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea over overlapping maritime areas. Phnom Penh said it will set out its position and pursue resolution under international law and peaceful means. Thailand’s prime minister’s office spokesman Rachada said on May 5 the cabinet decided to annul a 2001 memorandum with Cambodia on overlapping maritime areas and instead use UNCLOS mechanisms to better protect national interests; the 2001 memorandum had focused on negotiating a maritime boundary and joint exploitation of offshore oil resources.
