Hong Kong equities closed lower after failing to extend yesterday’s gains. The Hang Seng Index fell 1.56% and the Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 2.74%. Market turnover was HKD 322.9 billion. Major tech heavyweights led declines: Meituan (03690.HK) slipped about 6%; Alibaba (09988.HK), Tencent (00700.HK), Xiaomi (01810.HK) and BYD (01211.HK) all fell more than 3%. Semiconductors and electronic-components names outperformed: 02577.HK advanced over 7% and 06809.HK rose about 6%. 02513.HK spiked more than 10% intraday before closing up 3.54%.

Switzerland's economy ministry said talks with the United States on a trade agreement are ongoing and that Switzerland is factoring current developments into the negotiations.
