Japan digital minister Matsumoto warned on Friday that the country risks
becoming an "AI colony" if it cannot keep pace with rapid AI development. He
defended a government bill to amend the Personal Data Protection Law to permit
AI developers to use personal records, including medical and criminal data, for
model training without individual consent, saying the change is intended to
prevent Japan from falling behind. Opposition parties have raised data-leak and
privacy risks.
