Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker ordered a suspension of the state's data center
tax incentives after the legislature shelved his proposal to bar passing data
center energy costs on to residents. The order excludes agreements signed before
July 1. Ohio this week also paused similar incentives as nationwide opposition
to data centers rises. Unions urged keeping the breaks, warning the move could
shift investment and jobs to neighboring states. Illinois granted nearly $1 bln
in data center tax incentives from 2020–2024.
