G7 officials say the United States and Iran are moving toward an agreement to
reopen the Strait of Hormuz ahead of next week’s G7 summit. One official said an
Iranian senior official signaled a high likelihood of reaching an agreement;
another said it would likely take the form of a memorandum of understanding
rather than a final treaty. The G7 summit runs June 15-17 in Evian; Geneva has
been proposed as a signing venue as early as Sunday. Officials cautioned Iran
has not confirmed readiness to sign, communications have been slow since the war
began in February, and earlier diplomatic progress has not been finalized.
