June 16 — National Bureau of Statistics spokesman and chief economist Fu Linghui
said the NBS this month published, for the first time, a combined retail sales
of consumer goods and services indicator. January–May combined retail sales rose
2.8% YoY. Fu said goods retail fell slightly in May, attributing the decline to
a high year-earlier base and weather-related (heat and heavy rain) weakness in
offline consumption in some regions, but on a combined goods-and-services basis
the consumption market remains stable and the trend toward quality upgrading is
unchanged.
