The UK government said on June 22 it is considering requiring social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube to prioritise content from government-designated reliable news sources, including broadcasters and TV stations, as part of plans to tighten industry regulation, Reuters reported. The government said making reliable news easier to find would help combat misinformation.

UK finance minister Reeves told the House of Commons she will publish the long-delayed defence investment plan before the NATO summit in Turkey on July 7-8. Reeves said she met Monday with new Defence Secretary Jarvis and Chief of the Defence Staff Richard Naiton to discuss a plan that will inject additional funding into the armed forces and rejected claims it fails to deliver sufficient spending growth. The plan, originally scheduled for autumn, was delayed and drew criticism after the former defence secretary resigned earlier this month, saying the Treasury was unwilling to commit the resources needed amid rising threats.
