Four people said on Wednesday that despite opposition from some U.S. lawmakers
the Trump administration plans to move forward with a sale of dozens of jet
engines to Turkey worth several hundred million dollars. The deal, seen as a
goodwill gesture ahead of next month’s NATO summit in Turkey, involves GE-made
engines intended for Turkey’s first indigenous fighter, KAAN, a program launched
in 2016 as part of Ankara’s drive for defense autonomy. One source said the
transaction would exceed $700m.
