The U.S. government will vet companies seeking to use OpenAI's latest model, GPT-5.6 (Sol), the Washington Post reports, marking a significant expansion of the Trump administration's oversight of Silicon Valley. OpenAI said the government will initially approve who can access the new model and that AI firms and government agencies will jointly develop a long-term regulatory framework. OpenAI warned it does not believe such a government approval process should become the default, saying it would prevent developers, enterprises, cybersecurity defenders and international partners from accessing the best tools.
