Malian armed forces said on the 4th multiple army positions were attacked in the early morning and that authorities are tracking developments. Positions hit were in the north at Aguelhok, Anefis and Gao, and in the central town of Sevare. The statement gave no details on the attackers, the sequence of events or casualties. Mali has faced persistent insecurity since 2012, with frequent terrorist attacks and armed clashes; the military has said it will continue operations against armed groups.

About 40 large wildfires are currently uncontrolled across the United States, concentrated in the US West. Colorado’s Aspen Acres fire is the most severe: as of July 3 it had burned about 297 sq km, destroyed more than 160 structures, forced thousands to evacuate and is reported fully out of control. The fire ignited southwest of Denver and, driven by persistent drought and strong winds, has spread into Pueblo and Custer counties. The NWS has issued red-flag warnings for large areas of the western US.
