At the White House, Trump said he called FIFA president Gianni Infantino about
U.S. player Balogun’s red card but “did not tell Infantino what to do,” adding
he cannot command FIFA and Infantino cannot decide alone and that FIFA’s
disciplinary committee “made the right decision.” Trump said he “knows sports,”
called Balogun’s sending-off “not a foul” and “not even an offense,” and
questioned why a red card should entail an additional suspension, calling it
unfair to ban a player from a match he did not play. He said the upcoming
U.S.-Belgium match should feature full-strength lineups and would be exciting,
and warned he would claim a “fix” if Belgium won, likening it to the 2020 U.S.
presidential election.
