At a July 7 regular briefing the foreign ministry said the navy’s
submarine-launched strategic missile test was routine military training, not
directed at any specific country or target. Beijing said it had notified the
Solomon Islands and other South Pacific states and relevant parties in advance,
that the activity complied with international law and practice, and reiterated
China adheres to a defensive nuclear strategy and maintains its nuclear forces
at the minimum level necessary for national security, urging others not to
over-interpret.
