The Ministry of Natural Resources' Tsunami Warning Center said a preliminary
magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck at 18:26 BJT on July 11, 2026, in the South
Sandwich Islands region (55.43°S, 29.10°W) in the South Atlantic, at a focal
depth of 15 km. The centre judged the quake could generate a local tsunami near
the epicentre but, because the epicentre lies outside the Pacific, it does not
pose a threat to China's coast. Exact parameters will be confirmed by the China
Earthquake Networks Center (CENC); the tsunami centre said it will continue to
monitor and issue updates.
