Hyundai Motor production workers began a three-day partial strike on Monday, leaving shifts two hours early until Wednesday, as the union demands higher bonuses and guarantees that jobs will not be displaced by AI and robots. The union is pushing to tie performance bonuses to 30% of prior-year consolidated net profit, a long-standing demand that has gained traction after Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix paid large bonuses to chip workers. Hyundai plans to deploy Atlas humanoid robots at U.S. plants from 2028 for high-volume, repetitive tasks; the union wants a formal agreement securing incomes before any Atlas deployment and conversion to full monthly salary. The union also seeks to raise the fixed bonus from 750% to 800% of monthly pay and increase base pay by KRW149,600 (about USD100). Yonhap estimates the walkout could cost more than KRW18.7 bln per hour.
