The Hong Kong government said on July 17 the U.S. decision not to extend the
national emergency on Hong Kong is an important step toward implementing
consensus from China-U.S. economic and trade talks. The government said
maintaining Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability serves China-U.S. mutual
interests and international expectations, welcomed the positive shift in U.S.
policy toward Hong Kong, and urged Washington to respect Chinese sovereignty and
Hong Kong’s rule of law and to restore and strengthen normal economic and trade
ties with the territory.
