A fire broke out at the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Asaka garrison, spanning Asaka city in Saitama Prefecture and Nerima ward in Tokyo, at about 11:30 a.m. local time on July 20 (10:30 a.m. Beijing). The garrison reported a trash pile initially ignited and the blaze spread to an adjacent warehouse; police and fire authorities are investigating. The Asaka garrison, which houses the Ground Component Command headquarters and other units, is regarded as the JGSDF’s nerve center.
